Tips to Making your Car More Eco-Friendly

If you’re like us, you are always looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint and making decisions about the cars we drive is no different. We’ve noticed more eco-friendly cars on the road than ever before; car companies and drivers are taking action to make commuting more efficient. But, how do we lessen our impact even more? Should we buy a hybrid or electric? Should we sell our car altogether and bike everywhere? Is the horse and buggy still a thing? Maybe, but before you make any drastic changes, here are some tips to help you make your current car more eco-friendly.

Lighten Your Load

The more weight on your car, the harder your engine has to work to move it. Clear out your car of items you don’t need. It’ll feel good, we promise. Once you’ve taken out the bulk, come get your interior detailed at Car Wash King! That way, you’ll have a reason to keep it from building up again. Or we can help you remove your things while we clean your car and you can organize them after.

Ride Sharing

The fewer cars on the road, the happier our planet. Carpool as much as you can. Share a Lyft with friends or offer to drive coworkers to lunch.

Use Less A/C & Heat

Air conditioning and heat use gas to operate and the more gas our cars use, the more pollution they emit. Turning these luxuries off occasionally can be a small change that makes a big impact.

Eco-Friendly Tires

If your tires aren’t fully inflated you can be missing out on between .6 percent and 3 percent improvement in gas mileage. We have tire gauges at Gleam and can help you determine if your tires are properly filled.

In addition, did you know you can buy eco-friendly tires? Tire manufacturers like Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear and Continental are making great strides to “end the use of fossil resources in tire manufacturing” decreasing waste and moving toward sustainability. Next time you are in the market for new tires, ask an associate about the eco-friendly version.

Drive Smarter

The better you drive, the easier it is for your car to perform. When we accelerate quickly, overworking our brakes and steering, our cars have to work harder. It’s simple. Drive well and your car will thank you.

Get Regular Tune-Ups

Keeping your car in good shape is one of the best ways you can lessen its impact on the environment. Regular oil changes and maintenance help keep your car running smoothly.

Don’t Top Off

When we fill up it’s often tempting to top off our tank to round up our cost. $25.00 looks so much better than $24.91. But, topping off can be very harmful to you and the environment. Our gas tanks are equipped with emission canisters that prevent harmful vapors from being released into the atmosphere. When we top off, we reduce the effectiveness of the emission canister, increasing the chances of releasing these vapors.

Your car is probably the second most expensive thing you own, following your house. Why not invest in its longevity and efficiency? Making these small changes can improve your car’s performance and lessen your negative impact on the environment.
